Most people focus on the inside of their home, forgetting the space that’s used most during the summer. Your patio is the perfect spot for entertaining and soaking in those extra hours of daylight. With the right design, your patio can be transformed into a fully functional living space.
Bring the Inside Out
One of the biggest trends right now focuses on making your patio an extension of your indoor living space. This can be accomplished with matching furniture, colors, and textures. If possible, consider using the same tile on your patio as used inside your home. This helps complete the look.
Update Your Patio Furniture
Replace your old wicker furniture with new, modern versions. Consider spending a little extra on your patio furniture this year. The pieces will look better, and likely last longer than less expensive models. You’ll want to make sure that the pieces you purchase are waterproof. This helps protect them from damage caused by inclement weather.
Decorate With Planters
Strategically placed planters add a splash of color and charm to your patio. For the most dramatic result, choose large planters in matching colors.
There’s nothing as relaxing or soothing as the sound of running water. Adding a fountain or water feature to your patio not only looks good; it also brings a touch of tranquility to your outdoor living space. This might be just what you need to relax after a long day.
Outdoor lighting increases the safety of your home and allows you to spend more time outdoors. It also provides a dramatic display for your outdoor living space. Outdoor lighting is available in a wide range of colors and styles.

A professionally designed landscape increases the beauty and value of your home, while enhancing the quality of your time spent outdoors. The right landscape designer can help you create a space that’s perfect for entertaining and relaxing.
It’s important to take the time necessary to find a quality landscape designer that is able to turn your outdoor space into a retreat. The landscape designer you choose should meet your needs, while incorporating your personal style. The following should be considered when choosing a landscape designer.
Landscaping Needs and Requirements
Every landscaping project is unique. Before searching for a landscape designer, it’s important that you figure out what you’d like to achieve with your landscaping project. Once you have a clear understanding of your needs and requirements, you can begin searching through portfolios online.
Look for a landscaping company that is able to offer a wide selection of services. They should have experience creating a variety of hardscapes and landscapes. Check how long the company has been in business and whether they have received any awards or accreditations for their work.
If the landscaping company is not helpful over the phone, they probably will be even less helpful if you experience a problem later. Good customer service is extremely important to the overall success of your landscaping project.
A professional landscape designer will listen to your ideas and concerns. Choose a company that will provide the individualized attention your project requires. This is crucial if you wish to create a space that is truly your own.
Even the best landscaping plans will fall apart if your designer uses the wrong materials. Before selecting a landscape designer, take a look at the landscaping materials the company uses.
Consider the condition of the landscaping companies’ vehicles, building, and employees. These things might not seem important now, but they can actually tell you a lot about the company. If they aren’t willing to put the time and effort necessary to make a good first impression, they might not be concerned with the quality of the work they produce.

If you’re like most people in Northern Virginia, you’ll probably be spending more time outdoors this summer. The warm summer months provide the perfect opportunity for entertaining, firing up the grill, and soaking in the extra hours of daylight.
Early spring is the best time to get your yard ready for summer. Starting now ensures that new plants will be well established when the time comes to fully enjoy your yard.
Plant More Flowers
Flowers add a splash of color to your landscape and make your home appear more welcoming to your guests. Planting an assortment of annuals and perennials ensures that you’ll have a gorgeous display of flowers all year long. If you are using fertilizers or digging in the dirt with your hands be sure to wear protective gloves. Shop bulk disposable nitrile gloves for all your home needs.
Many people spend long hours outdoors during the summer. You can stretch the time spent in your yard by adding landscape lighting. Strategically placed lighting helps highlight your landscape, improve the safety of your yard, add beauty, and increase the value of your home.
Water features are an excellent way to add peace and tranquility to your landscape. Consider adding a fountain or other water feature to your yard.
Outdoor Living Areas
If you plan to entertain this summer, you’ll want to make sure that you have plenty of spaces for your guests to gather. A gazebo, small patio, backyard fireplace or kitchen area create the perfect outdoor living space for entertaining.
Hanging baskets full of brightly colored flowers add height and beauty to your landscape. Baskets are the ideal choice for both large and small yards. For the best display, fill baskets with an assortment of plants that spill over the edge.
There’s nothing more frustrating than finding that deer have ruined your landscaping efforts. When choosing the flowers for your landscape, select varieties that are not appealing to deer. Butterfly weed, globe thistle, butterfly bush, and purple cornflower provide a gorgeous display while keeping deer away from your landscape.

Updating Your Landscape
It’s a good idea to prepare before attending the Capital Remodel and Garden Show. Consider bringing pictures of your home and yard to the event. If at all possible, have an idea of your budget. If this is your first time speaking with a landscaper and you are unsure of costs, don’t be afraid to ask about price ranges.
Before speaking with a design and build specialist, you should have a general idea of your time frame. You will want to research quality landscape companies to ensure the company you choose has a similar style to your own.
You have many options when updating your landscape. You’ll want to learn as much as you can about these options before beginning a project. Research different styles and materials, but always trust the advice of the landscape professional you hire. These are industry experts who understand what works and what does not. Our website is a great place to see different styles and materials.
The show is the perfect opportunity to learn about your landscape and hardscape options. It’s also a chance to meet the designer you’d like to work with. This year’s Capital Remodel and Garden Show will take place from February 23rd-25th at The Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, VA. Please visit Grigg Design at Booth #1147. We look forward to seeing you there!
Many people forget about their landscapes during the fall and winter. This is the time of year when plants go dormant and our yards become covered in snow. However, it’s also the best time to prepare your yard for the spring. A little effort now can go a long way towards a beautiful landscape later. The following winter landscaping tips can help you get started.
Mow Before Winter
It’s extremely important to mow your lawn short before winter. If left too long, it will fold over on itself during heavy rain or under the weight of fallen snow. This reduces air circulation, making your lawn weak and more susceptible to disease in the spring.
Cut Back Perennials
Cut the brown tops off perennial plants before the first snowfall. If the tops are still green, you will need to wait until spring to cut them back. It’s important to only cut tops that are yellow or brown.
Clear Snow From Trees
Snow can cause a lot of damage to trees, especially evergreens. After it has finished snowing, brush snow from limbs with a gentle, upward motion. Do not attempt to remove ice from trees. Doing so can cause significant damage.
Evaluate Your Landscape
Winter is an excellent time to evaluate your landscape. Consider which areas can be improved, and think about what you will plant in the spring. Sometimes the best solution won’t be plants at all. Hardscapes are an excellent way to compliment and complete your landscape.
Stock Up For Spring
Winter is the best time to purchase new gardening tools. They are often on sale, and stocking up now ensures that you’ll be ready to plant in the spring.
Add Color With Containers
Add a little color to your landscape by filling winter hardy containers with evergreen boughs of different colors and textures. Fill window boxes, hanging baskets and other containers and place them around your landscape.
