Achieve a Low Maintenance Landscape

You could do it yourself; you could go to the garden store, plant a few flowers, and call it a day. But what you have in mind is a little, shall we say, lower maintenance. Plants and shrubs, a fresh mowed lawn: You’d be amazed at what a little landscaping can do for your curb appeal. There’s more to it than that (and this may appeal to the Manassas VA homeowners among us without green thumbs).

Vegetation is important, but it’s only one piece of a larger landscaping puzzle.

We’re talking about hardscaping. Where flowers and bushes are considered softscaping, hardscaping has to do with the non-living elements of landscaping design, including paved walkways, walls, patios, features, and rocks. It is these hardscape elements that make up the foundation and anchor of any good residential landscape.

The expert Grigg Design and build team knows just the way to enhance the appearance of your yard, with just the right mix of design elements. Subtle hardscapes provide fluid continuity that carries through from the second you step out the door, on to the yard, and beyond, to the surrounding wild: A solid, and permanent fixture, contrasted against an ever-changing natural backdrop.

From flagstone walkways, to fire pits, Grigg Design is northern Virginia’s premier landscape builder, serving the needs of clients in Fairfax, Arlington, Manassas, and beyond for 25 years: Hire our expert team to install a single feature such as a garden installation, patio, walkway, retaining wall, etc.; or to manage a project with many facets.

Turn up the dial on your curb appeal, and your landscape dreams into reality.

Keep Your New Year’s Resolution: Design the Best Lawn on the Block

Your New Year’s resolution? To landscape the most beautiful lawn on the block. This is a commitment you’re determined to keep, and how. But it’s wintertime. The grass is dead. Snow and freezing temperatures threaten dormant plants. Ah, you suppose your Fairfax VA landscaping project is better left for spring. One might think, but no. You don’t have to wait. Get started right away. Add texture and color to get a head start on beautifying your yard for spring, and start enjoying the fruits of your labor right away. Consider:

A few winter landscaping tips.

Grow evergreens.

Evergreen trees are a welcome addition to any landscape, in any season. They’re green, but they’re also available in shades of yellow and blue. Evergreen trees and shrubs impart much needed light and life when the air around is dark and cold, and come spring, they stand strong as a focal point around which to design a lush oasis.

Mulch.

Covering soil with a solid layer of mulch will help reduce water loss, suppress weed growth, and protect your annuals from temperature extremes. A three- to four-inch layer of mulch is ideal for preventing soil sprouts and increasing moisture retention. Less is more; mulch depths should never exceed five or six inches, as more could lead to rot.

Decorate in winter themes.

A wheelbarrow, a window box: Long, lazy summer days are made of these. But what of them when the herbs have withered and there’s no dirt to be hauled? Get creative. Plant holly or rhododendron in containers; these love cold weather! Or, make a nest for the birds left behind. Stack firewood just so for ease of access and aesthetics.

Prune.

Winter is the time for pruning. Perennials as well as shrubs, hedges, and deciduous trees should be trimmed during the winter months. When doing so, take care to inspect the tree thoroughly and only cut limbs or branches that are decayed or dying. Not only will this practice bring your yard back to vibrant life in spring, proper pruning will greatly reduce your risk of injury via fallen limb.

Call Grigg Design to get started on your Fairfax VA hardscape.

Take a look outside. Go on; I’ll wait. What’s missing? Among your wildest dreams, what do you want for your yard? A fire pit to gather around, or a one-of-a-kind outdoor patio with a built-in grill and kitchen area? An arched trellis through which to weave ivy? Or a simple walkway to your favorite tree?

Winter is the best time to evaluate the state of your landscape, and to make plans for the party you’ll throw when you when that award: Best Lawn. The flowers are important. The trees are too. But what will truly set your yard apart is the focal point, the Fairfax VA hardscape designed just for you by our experts.  Sure you could walk down to the local garden center and landscape supply, but before you do, get a pro to take a look at your yard and give you the right advice.  Call Grigg Design today.

Increase the Value of your Northern VA Home with Landscaping

An excellent landscape design/installation that combines a nice selection of nursery grade plants and expertly installed hardscapes can add 5.5 % to 12.7 % to a home’s value, according to research done by Virginia Tech.

Are you unsuccessfully trying to sell your home or thinking of selling your home soon? Spring and Summer can be a tough as there are more homes for sale now than any other time during the year. You need something that will make your home stand-out and justify the price you are asking for.  This differentiator can be well maintained, professional landscape.

A well thought-out design that complements your home, and has been well maintained over the years are two items that will draw in potential home buyers. People can tell the difference between a landscape that had a professional design and installation, versus a few small flowers and shrubs planted just to “spruce things up”.

Having a professional landscape your exterior is one of the few home improvements that will continue to add value to your property as the plants age and mature. Large shade trees that have been properly placed will cool a house in the summer and help to warm the house in the winter.

Not only will professional landscaping increase the value of your home, a well maintained turf area of around 5000 sqft can produce enough oxygen for a family of 4 for a year!  Plus, it can help to reduce erosion and water runoff.

Finally, don’t forget that a newly installed professional landscape will give a homeowner “immediate gratification” and years of personal enjoyment with their family.  Whether you are cooking out or playing catch with your kids, some of the best memories are made in your yard.

So start your landscape design build project ASAP so you can enjoy it now and receive and excellent return on your investment.

BACKYARD SAFETY TIPS FOR MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day is the unofficial kick-off to summer. It brings in barbeques, pool parties, and late night festivities with your friends, family, and neighbors. It’s one of our favorite times of the year in northern Virginia! And after you’ve spent several weeks sprucing up the backyard or building your new patio, it’s time to really celebrate in style. But when planning your big kick-off celebration, make sure you take these following safety tips into consideration, so the fun isn’t put on hold to address an emergency situation.

  1. Keep your grill on a level surface and away from your house, garage, mulch and other flammable objects. You want the fire to stay where you put it, not destroy your home!
  2. While grilling, consider an apron to keep grease off your clothes, and use utensils with long handles. Keep these out of reach from small children or guests who’ve maybe had a bit too much to drink.
  3. If using charcoal, properly extinguish the flames once you’re finished grilling. Break up the embers with a long stick or grilling tool and cover the grill to cut off the oxygen supply. You can also slowly sprinkle small amounts of water on the coals to put out the flames.
  4. Always use goggles or protective sunglasses when using lawn power tools to clean up the yard. Put away all tools in a shed or closed off area, so the temptation to play with them is eliminated.
  5. If you need to dig a hole in the backyard to install a deck or fence, or for a planting project, call your local utility company to ensure you won’t inadvertently hit an underground gas or power line.
  6. Consider installing a fence around your in-ground pool for optimal safety. Most safety experts recommend the fence be at least four feet high and have latches out of the reach of children.
  7. Put away any toys or trippable objects that may be around the pool so no one takes an accidental dip.
  8. Always have adult supervision when children are swimming.
  9. If you do not have a fence, and want to keep people out of the pool, look into purchasing a sturdy pool cover.
  10. Inspect any playground equipment for protruding nails or screws, as well as wood rot and loose anchors. Make any needed repairs before the party.

Have ample sunscreen, bug spray, and water on hand. The summer temperatures can climb quickly, causing burns or dehydration. Simple preparations can keep the party going long after the sun goes down.
