Updating Your Landscape

It’s a good idea to prepare before attending the Capital Remodel and Garden Show. Consider bringing pictures of your home and yard to the event. If at all possible, have an idea of your budget. If this is your first time speaking with a landscaper and you are unsure of costs, don’t be afraid to ask about price ranges.

Before speaking with a design and build specialist, you should have a general idea of your time frame. You will want to research quality landscape companies to ensure the company you choose has a similar style to your own.

You have many options when updating your landscape. You’ll want to learn as much as you can about these options before beginning a project. Research different styles and materials, but always trust the advice of the landscape professional you hire. These are industry experts who understand what works and what does not. Our website is a great place to see different styles and materials.

The show is the perfect opportunity to learn about your landscape and hardscape options. It’s also a chance to meet the designer you’d like to work with. This year’s Capital Remodel and Garden Show will take place from February 23rd-25th at The Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, VA. Please visit Grigg Design at Booth #1147. We look forward to seeing you there!

Winter Landscaping Tips

Many people forget about their landscapes during the fall and winter. This is the time of year when plants go dormant and our yards become covered in snow. However, it’s also the best time to prepare your yard for the spring. A little effort now can go a long way towards a beautiful landscape later. The following winter landscaping tips can help you get started.

Mow Before Winter

It’s extremely important to mow your lawn short before winter. If left too long, it will fold over on itself during heavy rain or under the weight of fallen snow. This reduces air circulation, making your lawn weak and more susceptible to disease in the spring.

Cut Back Perennials

Cut the brown tops off perennial plants before the first snowfall. If the tops are still green, you will need to wait until spring to cut them back. It’s important to only cut tops that are yellow or brown.

Clear Snow From Trees

Snow can cause a lot of damage to trees, especially evergreens. After it has finished snowing, brush snow from limbs with a gentle, upward motion. Do not attempt to remove ice from trees. Doing so can cause significant damage.

Evaluate Your Landscape

Winter is an excellent time to evaluate your landscape. Consider which areas can be improved, and think about what you will plant in the spring. Sometimes the best solution won’t be plants at all. Hardscapes are an excellent way to compliment and complete your landscape.

Stock Up For Spring

Winter is the best time to purchase new gardening tools. They are often on sale, and stocking up now ensures that you’ll be ready to plant in the spring.

Add Color With Containers

Add a little color to your landscape by filling winter hardy containers with evergreen boughs of different colors and textures. Fill window boxes, hanging baskets and other containers and place them around your landscape.

It’s the Perfect Time for Hardscapes!

Hardscapes make outdoor living spaces more beautiful and functional. The right design and build company can help you turn your outdoor area into the living space you’ve always dreamed of. There are a number of reasons why fall is the best time to add hardscapes to your yard. The following are the top four reasons.

Easy Snow Removal

If you use rocks in your driveway then you already know how difficult it can be to remove snow. A gorgeous paved driveway makes snow removal a breeze. Grigg Design has the creativity and experience necessary to help you create hardscapes that compliment your home and landscape. Our professional designers work with you to determine the best materials for your driveway.

Prepare for Holiday Guests

Home improvement projects are difficult and unsightly during the holiday season. Now is the best time to add hardscapes, before guests begin visiting your home. Adding patios and walkways allows you to create beautiful outdoor spaces for your guests. Starting these projects now ensures they will be completed before the holidays.

Increase Access to Outdoor Areas

Rain and snow can make a yard wet, muddy and dangerous. Without proper hardscapes, outdoor areas become inaccessible during the winter. Adding patios and walkways makes it possible to access your yard at any time.

Increase Curb Appeal

Beautiful hardscapes not only look good, they can also increase your home’s value. Adding hardscapes improves curb appeal and makes outdoor areas safe. Both of these factors contribute to your home’s resale value.

Why Fall is the Perfect Season for Planting

When it comes to planting, most people immediately think of spring. However, the cool temperatures, reliable rainfall, and short, bright days of fall are ideal for planting. In fact, there are a number of reasons why fall is the better season for adding to your landscape.

Soil Temperature

Plants that are started in cold soil face many challenges. These plants often grow slowly, develop poorly and are more susceptible to disease. This has a lot to do with the fact that cold soil has fewer nutrients. Also, maximum fertilizer uptake through the roots occurs when the soil is between 45 and 55 degrees. During the fall, soil temperatures are much warmer than in the spring.

Reduced the Chance of Shock

Many plants go dormant in the fall, although their roots continue to grow. This period of rest is crucial to the plant’s survival through winter. Planting in the fall causes plants less shock than planting in the spring, when most growth occurs.

Less Watering

The sun tends to be less intense during the fall and temperatures are typically lower. This means less watering and less water loss in plants. Also, ground moisture is generally very good in the fall.

Weed Control

Throughout the fall, weeds are less of a problem. This means less competition for new plants. It’s also much easier to control weeds this time of year. During the fall, most weeds will be shifting their focus from their leaves to their roots. When treating with herbicide in the fall, the plant will readily move the chemical to the roots, destroying the entire plant in the process.

Develop Healthy Roots

When planted in the fall, new plants are able to develop a healthy root system before the spring. Instead of starting from scratch, plants are well established in time for the growing season. This puts them in the best possible position for growth.

Final Thoughts

It’s extremely important to get everything planted before the ground freezes. Even if it’s very late in the season, you need to get plants into the ground. They’ll be much happier and safer than in their plastic nursery pots.

Top 10 Ways to Prepare Your Backyard and Patio for Winter

Summer is coming to an end and many of us are turning our attention to fall. During the fall it’s important to begin preparing your yard for winter. The following tips can help.

1. Evaluate Your Garden
Take a good look around your garden to see how your plants are doing. Pay close attention to which plants have survived and which ones did not. Check to see if anything has outgrown its space.

2. Add mulch
Mulch helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds and protect soil. Identify areas that can benefit, and add mulch as necessary. Be sure to brush mulch off any branches on shrubs as it can cause them to yellow.

3. Power Wash Your Deck
Over the summer, your deck gets a lot of use. This leads to an accumulation of dirt and debris. A power washer can remove dirt build-up quickly and easily. Before cleaning, make sure that you’re using the right setting for your deck.

4. Keep Hardscapes Clean
During the fall, leaves and debris can accumulate on hardscapes, staining them over time. The best way to protect hardscapes is to keep them clean of debris. Thinking of adding hardscapes to your property this year? Find out more!

5. Clean and Store Grills and Backyard Accessories
Fully clean your grill and backyard accessories before storing them for winter. Even though these items are made from outdoor-safe materials, they can become a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. Cleaning them now ensures they’ll be ready to use next spring.

6. Prepare Plants
There are a few things that must be done to prepare your plants for winter. Deadhead spent blooms, remove finished annuals, weed and dig up any non-hardy bulbs.

7. Invite Birds to Your Garden
Attract birds to your garden by putting up a feeder. Birds do an excellent job controlling insects in your yard.

8. Check Plants for Disease
Inspect all plants for damage and signs of disease. Disease on plants can worsen over the winter and spread in the spring. Now is the time to remove or care for damaged or diseased plants.

9. Prepare Roses for Winter
Roses should never be pruned or fertilized during the fall. Just before the first frost, replace old mulch under roses with fresh. After the ground freezes, you will need to add even more mulch. This will position them to return beautifully next year.

10. Clean Your Shed
Prepare your shed for winter by clearing out and replacing old chemicals and oiling metal tools.

Summer Landscaping Tips

It can be difficult to keep your landscape looking good throughout the summer. With the right knowledge and a little effort, your landscape can remain healthy and beautiful all summer long. The following landscape tips can help.

Irrigation

It’s important to keep your landscape watered throughout the summer. However, you will need to take care not to over water. Too much water can be harmful to plants and especially damaging to your lawn. In fact, overwatering your lawn can cause shallow roots, making it more susceptible to disease and malnourishment. Your landscape should receive the equivalent of one inch of rain per week. This amount should be split across two or three days.

Pruning

Pruning should never take place during the summer. Removing leafy growth from plants can expose their stems, making them vulnerable to sun scald. Pruning during the summer also makes plants less water efficient.

Pests

Summer often brings an increase in insects and disease. Sometimes pests don’t cause enough damage to affect your landscape. Other times, they can be a major problem. How you treat pests is your own personal choice. While most pests are eventually taken care of by nature, insecticides can be used to eliminate pests and the damage they cause. There are a wide variety of insecticides available. The best time to spray for pests is in the late evening.

Mowing

Lawns can be mowed as needed throughout the summer, but care should be taken to not remove more than one-third of its height. This prevents roots from becoming stressed and keeps weed infestations at bay.

Flowers

Now is the time to deadhead flowers. Remove the heads of both annuals and perennials. This helps keep their energy on producing flowers as opposed to seed development.

Summer in Northern Virginia can be hard on landscapes. Spending a little time each day on your landscape can go a long way towards keeping it healthy.

Achieve a Low Maintenance Landscape

You could do it yourself; you could go to the garden store, plant a few flowers, and call it a day. But what you have in mind is a little, shall we say, lower maintenance. Plants and shrubs, a fresh mowed lawn: You’d be amazed at what a little landscaping can do for your curb appeal. There’s more to it than that (and this may appeal to the Manassas VA homeowners among us without green thumbs).

Vegetation is important, but it’s only one piece of a larger landscaping puzzle.

We’re talking about hardscaping. Where flowers and bushes are considered softscaping, hardscaping has to do with the non-living elements of landscaping design, including paved walkways, walls, patios, features, and rocks. It is these hardscape elements that make up the foundation and anchor of any good residential landscape.

The expert Grigg Design and build team knows just the way to enhance the appearance of your yard, with just the right mix of design elements. Subtle hardscapes provide fluid continuity that carries through from the second you step out the door, on to the yard, and beyond, to the surrounding wild: A solid, and permanent fixture, contrasted against an ever-changing natural backdrop.

From flagstone walkways, to fire pits, Grigg Design is northern Virginia’s premier landscape builder, serving the needs of clients in Fairfax, Arlington, Manassas, and beyond for 25 years: Hire our expert team to install a single feature such as a garden installation, patio, walkway, retaining wall, etc.; or to manage a project with many facets.

Turn up the dial on your curb appeal, and your landscape dreams into reality.

Keep Your New Year’s Resolution: Design the Best Lawn on the Block

Your New Year’s resolution? To landscape the most beautiful lawn on the block. This is a commitment you’re determined to keep, and how. But it’s wintertime. The grass is dead. Snow and freezing temperatures threaten dormant plants. Ah, you suppose your Fairfax VA landscaping project is better left for spring. One might think, but no. You don’t have to wait. Get started right away. Add texture and color to get a head start on beautifying your yard for spring, and start enjoying the fruits of your labor right away. Consider:

A few winter landscaping tips.

Grow evergreens.

Evergreen trees are a welcome addition to any landscape, in any season. They’re green, but they’re also available in shades of yellow and blue. Evergreen trees and shrubs impart much needed light and life when the air around is dark and cold, and come spring, they stand strong as a focal point around which to design a lush oasis.

Mulch.

Covering soil with a solid layer of mulch will help reduce water loss, suppress weed growth, and protect your annuals from temperature extremes. A three- to four-inch layer of mulch is ideal for preventing soil sprouts and increasing moisture retention. Less is more; mulch depths should never exceed five or six inches, as more could lead to rot.

Decorate in winter themes.

A wheelbarrow, a window box: Long, lazy summer days are made of these. But what of them when the herbs have withered and there’s no dirt to be hauled? Get creative. Plant holly or rhododendron in containers; these love cold weather! Or, make a nest for the birds left behind. Stack firewood just so for ease of access and aesthetics.

Prune.

Winter is the time for pruning. Perennials as well as shrubs, hedges, and deciduous trees should be trimmed during the winter months. When doing so, take care to inspect the tree thoroughly and only cut limbs or branches that are decayed or dying. Not only will this practice bring your yard back to vibrant life in spring, proper pruning will greatly reduce your risk of injury via fallen limb.

Call Grigg Design to get started on your Fairfax VA hardscape.

Take a look outside. Go on; I’ll wait. What’s missing? Among your wildest dreams, what do you want for your yard? A fire pit to gather around, or a one-of-a-kind outdoor patio with a built-in grill and kitchen area? An arched trellis through which to weave ivy? Or a simple walkway to your favorite tree?

Winter is the best time to evaluate the state of your landscape, and to make plans for the party you’ll throw when you when that award: Best Lawn. The flowers are important. The trees are too.
